Modern automobiles are fully integrated with an array of electronic sensors and computer systems to maximize performance, efficiency, and safety. A vehicle's computer data system is a combination of multiple sub systems such as: ECU (Electronic Control Unit), TCM (Transmission Control Module), ABS (Anti-lock Brake System), ESC (Electronic Stability Control), SRS (Supplemental Restraint System), BCM (Body Control Module).
When one or more of the many vehicle equipped sensors detects readings beyond a normal range, the vehicle's computer modules activate one or more indicators on the dash to alert the driver of an issue. When an indicator is illuminated it should not be ignored. Even though no other symptoms of failure are exhibited, a failure could still exist and eventually lead to other failures and more costly repairs.
Specialized computer equipment is required to properly diagnose vehicle computer codes and why they have triggered a dash indicator light. Auto parts stores sell code readers that the average person can use to identify what sensors have tripped, however, these low costs readers do not provide additional vehicle info that can assist certified technicians to remedy and repair problems with the vehicle. CVTs offer increased fuel efficiency, but can be more expensive to repair and maintain than other transmission types.
