Tires
Tires are often overlooked as part of a vehicle's regular maintenance, but is nonetheless critical to the performance and safety of the automobile. Worn tires lead to poor fuel economy, increase braking distance, and increase the liklihood of losing traction on wet roads. Severely worn tires are also more likley to have a blowout which can cause the vehicle to lose control. Tires should be rotated every 5,000 miles or at the time of each oil change. Rotating the tires ensures that the tires wear evenly and maximize the life of the tires. Modern cars and trucks are equipped with electronic sensors known as TPMS or Tire Pressure Monitoring System. Tires should also be inspected regularly for tread wear, punctures, and deformities. Irregular tire wear may also indicate issues with vehicle chassis suspension and steering components.
Steering an Suspension
An automobile's suspension consists of a number of mechanical, electronic, and hydraulic or pneumatic components. Worn or failed suspension components can cause a reduction in performance and safety as well. Worn or failed suspension components can cause or contribute to poor fuel economy, reduce the effectiveness of safety systems, reduced ride comfort, and can increase the wear on other vehicle components such as tires mentioned above. Struts, shock absorbers, control arms, stabilizers, springs, and their associated mounts, bushings, and bearing races experience immense forces while providing a safe, comfortable ride. Modern vehicles are equipped with computerized suspension systems that increase safety by preventing skidding, slipping, and even rollover. These systems are known as ESC (Electronic Stability Control), TCS (Traction Control System), or simply stability management. Electronic suspension components require advanced diagnostic systems that provide data to technicians to help identify and repair suspension issues.
Brakes
Irregular tire wear and suspension issues can also caused by, or related to, steering system issues. Automotive steering components are constantly in motion and subject to extensive wear depending on driving styles and road conditions. Steering issues could arise from an array of parts including: wheel bearings, spindles, CV axels, tie-rods, ball joints, steering rack, pinion gears, or power steering pumps. Like tires and suspension, steering component wear or failure can lead to poor economy, reduced safety, and increased wear on other vehicle parts. Service of steering components often require the use of specialized lifts and tools to ensure proper alignment and torque ratings which maximize vehicle performance and safety. Hydraulic power steering pumps are powered by the engine's pulley system and use fluid to assist in steering the vehicle easily and safely. Many modern cars and trucks are equipped with electronic assisted steering that use an electric motor to enhance steering capability and function. Modern vehicles also utilize the same electronic systems to maximize performance and safety as the suspension system and braking system.
Automotive braking systems are also a blend of mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic components. Proper maintenance and service of brake components are essential to the safety of the driver and their passengers. Worn brake pads or shoes increase braking distance. Worn brake rotors and/or drums also contribute to poor brake performance, while failure of ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) components can drastically reduce safety as the ABS provides data for the stability management system and is also integrated into the TPMS system. Diagnostic service performed on the ABS system assist technicians in the repair and/or replacement of brake parts from calipers and brake lines to ABS modules and wheelspeed sensors. Braking systems should be inspected for wear on a regular basis and parts should be replaced prior to failure to ensure proper function and maximum safety.
